1984 - The "computer for the rest of us" was born.
- The Macintosh (Macintosh 128K) debuted officially at $2495 on January 24th.
- MacWrite and MacPaint was bundled with the Macintosh.
- The Macintosh 512K was introduced at $3,195 on September 10th.
- The first price break in Macintosh history! When the Mac 512K came out, the Mac 128K was reduced to $2,199.
- The third application out for the Macintosh was Microsoft BASIC v1.0.
- An early unfinished version of MacTerminal was passed out at dealer stores, all you could do was connect to another Macintosh.
- The MacWorks software was ready for shipment in late November.
- The Macintosh 512K Upgrade was introduced at $995.
- January 1984 - System .85 / Finder 1.0 found on the Macintosh Guided Tour disk that was shipped with the Mac 128K!
- January 1984 - System 1.0 / Finder 1.0 (Macintosh System Software) was released. (System .97)
- There is a "Fake" System 1.0 that appeared on an Apple Developers CD-ROM, Take a look!
- May 1984 - System 1.1 / Finder 1.1g (Macintosh System Software) was released
- May 1984 - System 1.1 / Finder 1.1h found on the Macintosh Guided Tour disk that was shipped when System 1.1 was released!
1985 - The Macintosh Office was announced in January.
- The Macintosh XL was announced on January 1st.
- April 1985 - System 2.0 / Finder 1.1g (Macintosh System Software 0.1) was released
- April 1985 - System 2.0 / Finder 4.1 (Macintosh System Software 0.3 & 0.5) was released
1986 - The Macintosh Plus was introduced at $2,599 in January 16th.
- MacWrite and MacPaint is not bundeled with the Mac Plus, only the Mac 512K. They are available for $125 each.
- The Macintosh Plus Upgrade Kits was introduced for the previous Macintoshes.
- Lisa and Mac XL owners can upgrade to a Mac Plus system (Mac Plus with HD20 hard disk) for $1,498.
- The Macintosh 512Ke was introduced at $1,999 in April 14th.
- January 1986 - System 3.0 / Finder 5.1 (Macintosh System Software 0.7) was released
- February 1986 - System 3.1 / Finder 5.2 (System Software 1.0) was released
- February 1986 - System 3.1.1 / Finder 5.4 found on the Macintosh Guided Tour disk that was shipped with the Mac 512Ke!
- June 1986 - System 3.2 / Finder 5.3 (System Software 1.1) was released
1987 -
- The Macintosh SE was introduced at $3,699 in March 2nd.
- January 1987 - System 3.3 / Finder 5.4 (System Software 2.0) was released
- March 1987 - System 4.0 (System Software 2.0.1) was released
- April 1987 - System 4.1 / Finder 5.5 (System Software 2.0.1) was released
- June 1987 - AppleShare 1.1 was released
- October 1987 - System 4.2 / Finder 6.0 (System Software Update 5.0) was released
- November 1987 - System 4.3 / Finder 6.0 (System Software Update 5.1) was released
1988 -
- June 1988 - System 6.0 /Finder 6.1 (System Software Update 6.0) was released.
- June 1988 - System 6.1 /Finder 6.1 (System Software Update 6.0) was found on a game disk, Arkanoid.
- August 1988 - System 6.0.2 /Finder 6.1 (System Software Update 6.0.2) was released.
1989 -
- The Macintosh SE/30 was introduced at $4,899 in January 19th.
- The Macintosh SE FDHD was introduced at $3,899 in August 1st.
- January 1989 - System 6.0.3 /Finder 6.1 (System Software Update 6.0.3) was released.
- September 1989 - System 6.0.4 /Finder 6.1 (System Software Update 6.0.4) was released.
1990 -
- The Macintosh Classic was introduced at $1,499 in October 15th.
- March 1990 - System 6.0.5 /Finder 6.1 (System Software Update 6.0.5) was released.
- ? 1990 - System 6.0.6 /Finder 6.1 (System Software Update 6.0.6) was not released.
- October 1990 - System 6.0.7 /Finder 6.1 (System Software Update 6.0.7) was released.
1991 -
- The Macintosh Classic II (Performa 200) was introduced at $1,899 in October 21st.
- April 1991 - System 6.0.8 /Finder 6.1 (System Software Update 6.0.8) was released.
- May 1991 - System 7.0 /Finder 7.0 (System Software 7.0) was released.
- System 7.01 /Finder 7.01 (System Software 7.01) was released.
1992 -
- February 1992 - System 6.0.8L /Finder 6.1 (System Software Update 6.0.8L) was released.
- System 7.1 /Finder 7.1 (System Software 7.1) was released.
1993 -
- February 1993 - The Macintosh Color Classic (Performa 250) was introduced at $1,390 on February 10th.
- October 1993 - The Macintosh Color Classic II (Performa 275) was introduced on October 21st.
1994 -
- System 7.5 /Finder 7.5 (System Software 7.5) was released.
1997 -
- System 7.6 /Finder 7.6 (System Software 7.6) was released.
- System 8.0 /Finder 8.0 (System Software 8.0) was released.
1998 -
- System 8.1 /Finder 8.1 (System Software 8.1) was released.
1999 -
- System 9.0 /Finder 9.0 (System Software 9.0) was released.
2000 -
- System 9.0.4 /Finder 9.0.4 (System Software 9.0.4) was released
- September 13, 2000 - Mac OS X (System Software 10 Public Beta) was released - Code Name Kodiak
2001 -
- January 2001 - System 9.1 /Finder 9.1 (System Software 9.1) was released.
- March 2001 - Mac OS X (System Software 10) was released - Code Name Cheetah
- September 25, 2001 - Mac OS X 10.1 (System Software 10.1) was released - Code Name Puma
2002 -
- August 23, 2002 - Mac OS X 10.2 (System Software 10.2) was released - Code Name Jaguar
2003 -
- October 24, 2003 - Mac OS X 10.3 (System Software 10.3) was released - Code Name Panther
2005 -
- April 29, 2005 - Mac OS X 10.4 (System Software 10.4) was released - Code Name Tiger
2007 -
- October 26, 2007- Mac OS X 10.5 (System Software 10.5) was released - Code Name Leopard
2009 -
- ??? 2009 - Mac OS X 10.6 (System Software 10.6) was released - Code Name Snow Leopard
The System version shots were done using a application called "SysVersion".
This was the only real way of determining which System was which.
